This game was likely localized due to the breakout success of Final Fantasy VII. The series developed its own conventions that made it unique compared to other Squaresoft games like Final Fantasy and Secret of Mana.Īnd then came SaGa Frontier on the PlayStation.
After that were the Romancing SaGa games (1-3) on the Super Famicom that were not released in English until recently. The first SaGa games were The Final Fantasy Legend, Final Fantasy Legend II, and Final Fantasy Legend III on the Gameboy. The actual system was more complicated than that (and apparently very exploitable in the original game) and was carried into the SaGa series. To put it simply, attacking would raise your strength, getting hit would raise your HP, and so on. Have you ever played Final Fantasy II (the actual one on the NES)? That game is essentially “ SaGa 0.” Final Fantasy II was notable for its progression system wherein your stat increases were based on actions you took in battle. More positively, SaGa Frontier is also an incredibly unique game with amazing visuals that gave the player a degree of freedom that wasn’t common in JRPGs at the time.
All of this is why this game getting a remaster was so unexpected! It’s a fairly niche game with a high learning curve and is known for its esoteric game systems and not giving the player any sense of where to go to continue the story. It came in on (was actually localized) the JRPG boom caused by Final Fantasy VII‘s success. SaGa Frontier is a quirky little JRPG released in English in 1998 by Squaresoft (now Square Enix).

The announcement was pretty shocking in a year already full of shocking events! Other fans of this game that I know were just as surprised as I was. So… Square Enix announced a remaster of SaGa Frontier last November.
